Last week, Tesla Motors announced that it was granting public and free license of its portfolio of several hundred patents. Tesla attests that it will not initiate patent lawsuits against those who use their technology ‚in good faith‘. Tesla decided to take this step ‚in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.‘ The open source movement, of which Google and Twitter are also participants, seeks to reduce unnecessary patent litigation across the tech world.
If companies take advantage of this public technology, this may result in more competition and growth in the zero-emission auto market, which also advances Tesla’s business.
