LVMH (LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A.) and eBay vow to work together against the online sale of counterfeit luxury goods. This partnership began with legal proceedings which LVMH brought against eBay in 2008 for allowing fakes to be sold through its website. Since that time, eBay has suspended or blocked nearly 100,000 sellers. Now, following a confidential settlement, the companies announced that they are planning a joint effort to implement cooperative measures for protecting intellectual property online.
Consumer frustration over counterfeit goods lead to the birth of online marketplaces such as Vestiaire Collective and The Real Deal, which offer assurances as to the genuineness of their pieces. Perhaps eBay will catch up to these websites through this collaboration. If you sell your consumer products online, consider these strategies to combat counterfeiters:
1.Register your marks with worldwide customs authorities.
2.Incorporate anti-counterfeiting labels into your products.
3.Engage in relevant public relations campaigns.
4.Discuss targeted litigation with your attorney.
